Spirit Resonance: The Vitality of Printmaking

In the sixth century, artist and art historian Xie He described six key components necessary for a successful work of art. His first requirement was a “spirit resonance” or vitality present in the work; without this element, there was no need to look further. The image must be animated through an intangible quality that comes directly from the artist’s energy and cannot be learned. The harmony and balance of the finished artwork depends on this spirit resonance, much like the notes of a song flow together.

Although Xie He was referencing ink painting in his directive, the philosophy applies equally to the art forms shown here: various forms of printmaking. Through monotype, lithography, screen-print and image transfer processes, the artists in this exhibition all grapple with notions of balance and harmony in their work, but the result is an energy that transcends materiality. The abstract nature of many of these works makes this intangible quality even more relevant; the lack of figural representation or narrative means that something else must resound with the audience. It is the spirit resonance, and though it is indescribable, it is also indispensable.

The exhibition will highlight works by artists Taiko Chandler, Catherine Chauvin, Marie-Dolma Chophel, Angela Craven, Jade Hoyer and Sangeeta Reddy. Spirit Resonance: The Vitality of Printmaking is guest curated by Sarah Magnatta.

En el siglo 6, el artista e historiador del arte Xie describió seis componentes clave necesarios para una obra de arte exitosa. Su primer requisito fue una "resonancia espiritual" o vitalidad presente en el trabajo; sin este elemento, no había necesidad de buscar más. La imagen debe ser animada a través de una calidad intangible que proviene directamente de la energía del artista y eso es algo que no se puede aprender. La armonía y el equilibrio de la obra de arte terminada depende de esta resonancia espiritual, de la misma manera que las notas de una canción fluyen juntas.

Aunque Xie se refería a la pintura con tinta en su directiva, la misma filosofía se aplica igualmente a las formas de arte que se muestran aquí: varias formas de grabado. A través de los procesos de monotipo, litografía, serigrafía y transferencia de imágenes, los artistas en esta exposición yuxtaponen nociones de equilibrio y armonía en su trabajo, y el resultado es una energía que trasciende la materialidad. La naturaleza abstracta de muchos de estos trabajos hace que esta calidad intangible sea aún más relevante. La falta de representación figurativa o narrativa significa que algo más debe resonar con la audiencia. Es la resonancia espiritual, y aunque es indescriptible, también es indispensable.
