In 2003, Rochelle Johnson moved to the Five Points neighborhood, a mostly black and brown community once labeled the “Harlem of the West.” Five Points has long been going through changes and gentrification. Johnson has been a constant observer of the interactions between different people, watching the ways people react and relate to one another. Their interactions, both good and bad, have long been a curiosity of Johnson’s and that curiosity inspired her current painting series which documents the lives and spirits of urban people. “Portrait of a City” focuses on Denver’s changing landscape. As she paints the evolving neighborhood, she’s struck by how some things have stayed the same; people want to build community wherever they go. Gentrification is now prolific, and neighborhoods that once were safe havens of cultural heritage are radically shifting from one culture to another. With the socioeconomic displacement the inner city, neighborhoods look more mixed than ever before. At first, Johnson could only see the lost pieces of her neighborhood, but through the changing landscape of her home, she’s building new relationships with her neighbors. “Portrait of a City” is the outcome of those new connections.

En 2003, Rochelle Johnson se mudó al vecindario Five Points, una comunidad mayoritariamente afroamericana y méxico-americana que alguna vez fue conocida como el "Harlem del Oeste". Five Points ha estado experimentando cambios y gentrificación durante mucho tiempo. Johnson ha sido una observadora constante de las interacciones entre diferentes personas, observando las formas en que las personas reaccionan y se relacionan entre sí. Sus interacciones, tanto buenas como malas, han despertado desde hace mucho tiempo la curiosidad de Johnson y esa curiosidad inspiró su serie de pinturas que documentan las vidas y los espíritus de la gente urbana. "Retrato de una Ciudad" se centra en el paisaje cambiante de Denver. Mientras ella pinta el vecindario en evolución, ella se sorprende de cómo algunas cosas se han mantenido igual. La gente quiere construir una comunidad donde quiera que las personas vayan. La gentrificación ahora es prolífica y los vecindarios que alguna vez fueron refugios seguros del patrimonio cultural están cambiando radicalmente de una cultura a otra. Con el desplazamiento socioeconómico del centro de la ciudad, los barrios se ven más mezclados que nunca. Al principio, Johnson sólo podía ver las piezas perdidas de su vecindario, pero a través del paisaje cambiante de su hogar, está construyendo nuevas relaciones con sus vecinos. "Retrato de una Ciudad" es el resultado de esas nuevas conexiones.
