Eyes Wide Shut - Visual Meditations on the Plague

Denver played a pivotal role in early AIDS activism as the center for a human rights movement pushing compassion, empathy and respect for those living with HIV and AIDS. In June, 1983, a group of people living with AIDS came together and created The Denver Principles, a revolutionary affirmation that demanded respect, dignity and autonomy for those living with HIV. 

In honor of the 40th anniversary of this momentous declaration, we present “Eyes Wide Shut – Visual Meditations on the Plague,” an art exhibit exploring how some saw the plague of AIDS and decided to do nothing about it, and those who instead stepped forward to bring the epidemic into the light. Through a new perspective, we gain insight into our role in history (including violence and protests), and move through discovery, despite pain and loss along the way. Ultimately, this journey brings us to hope and transcendence.

The exhibit raises thought-provoking questions pertaining to the AIDS epidemic, such as "What do we do?" and "What did we do?" and “What should we do?” while chronicling the tragic history of AIDS and its impact on America. 
The exhibition begins by exploring artists who have represented the gay community since the start of the epidemic. Some works do not explicitly reference AIDS and HIV, but leave a haunting imprint of that time and space. The exhibit also includes current works from contemporary artists exploring related themes such as loss, erotica and the impact of social media.

Denver desempeñó un papel fundamental en el activismo temprano por el SIDA como el centro de un movimiento de derechos humanos que impulsaba la compasión, la empatía y el respeto por las personas que viven con el VIH y el SIDA. En junio de 1983, un grupo de personas que vivían con SIDA se unieron y crearon The Denver Principles (Los Principios de Denver), una afirmación revolucionaria que exigía respeto, dignidad y autonomía para quienes viven con el VIH.

En honor al 40º aniversario de esta trascendental declaración, presentamos "Eyes Wide Shut - Visual Meditations on the Plague" (Ojos Muy Cerrados – Meditaciones Visuales Sobre la Plaga), una exhibición de arte que explora cómo algunos vieron la plaga del SIDA y decidieron no hacer nada al respecto, mientras que otros, en cambio, decidieron hacer algo para sacar la epidemia a la luz. A través de una nueva perspectiva, obtenemos información sobre nuestro papel en la historia (incluidas la violencia y las protestas) y avanzamos a través del descubrimiento, a pesar del dolor y la pérdida en el camino. En última instancia, este viaje nos lleva a la esperanza y la trascendencia.

La exhibición plantea preguntas que invitan a la reflexión relacionadas con la epidemia del SIDA, como "¿Qué hacemos?", “¿Qué hicimos?" y “¿Qué debemos hacer?” A la vez, se narra la trágica historia del SIDA y su impacto en Estados Unidos.

La exposición comienza explorando artistas que han representado a la comunidad gay desde el comienzo de la epidemia. Algunas obras no hacen referencia explícita al SIDA y el VIH, pero dejan una huella inquietante de ese tiempo y espacio. La exhibición también incluye obras actuales de artistas contemporáneos que exploran temas relacionados como la pérdida, el erotismo y el impacto de las redes sociales. 

Estas obras de arte pueden incluir temas e imágenes para adultos.
