Chained Voices: DU Prison Arts Initiative

The Chained Voices Fine Art Show supports incarcerated residents of the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) by providing them the opportunity to display and sell their original artwork to the public through virtual galleries and in-person exhibitions.

This year, 154 artists from 16 CDOC facilities contributed 360 pieces of art:

Through Chained Voices, artists may submit up to three pieces of art, such as paintings, drawings, sketches, sculpture, clothing and jewelry. The artists set their arts’ price. If an artwork sells, the full amount is given to the artist. Many of the artists send the money to their loved ones—children, wives, husbands, other close relatives and friends. Others use their funds to purchase art supplies. Contributors also spend their proceeds on extra food, clothing and the day-to-day essentials.

The Chained Voices Committee is made up of staff from the University of Denver Prison Arts Initiative (DU PAI) and Denver-based forensic social workers and defense attorneys. New to the Chained Voices Fine Art Show is a partnership with Denver Arts & Venues (DAV). The committee is thrilled to have this McNichols Civic Center Building exhibition professionally curated by Arts & Venues staff. The 2022 call-for-art packet included a letter from Shanna Shelby, Arts & Venues chief curator, which detailed the agency’s mission, “So that all may thrive,” and a brief history of the McNichols Civic Center Building, as well as an explanation of the curatorial process. This letter was sent in the spirit of friendship, inspiration and community-building, so that Chained Voices artists were given the same amount of professional respect and dignity inherent to artists on the outside.

The themes of this year’s show are “Light That is Born from Darkness” and “Resiliency.” Artists needing prompting could engage with these concepts if they chose, but no pre-requisite of theme existed for selection into the virtual or in-person galleries. Making an exception for gang-related content, which is highly rare, all submitted art is accepted and showcased on the Chained Voices website - chainedvoices.org.

To purchase the art exhibited on the McNichols Building second floor, scan the QR code next to the artwork. You’ll be taken to the artist’s page on the Chained Voices website. From there, you’ll be prompted on how to add your selection to your shopping cart.

La exhibición de bellas artes “Chained Voices” (Voces Encadenadas) apoya a los residentes encarcelados del Departamento Correccional de Colorado (CDOC) brindándoles la oportunidad de exhibir y vender sus obras de arte originales al público a través de galerías virtuales y exhibiciones en persona.

A través de Voces Encadenadas, los artistas pueden presentar hasta tres obras de arte, como pinturas, dibujos, bocetos, esculturas, ropa o joyas. Los artistas fijan el precio de sus creaciones artísticas. Si una obra de arte se vende, el monto total se entrega al artista. Muchos de los artistas envían el dinero a sus seres queridos: hijos, esposas, esposos, otros parientes cercanos y amigos. Otros usan sus fondos para comprar materiales de arte. Los contribuyentes también gastan sus ingresos en alimentos adicionales, ropa y artículos esenciales para el día a día.

El Comité de Voces Encadenadas está compuesto por personal de la Iniciativa de Artes Penitenciarias de la Universidad de Denver (DU PAI) y trabajadores sociales forenses y abogados defensores con sede en Denver. Lo nuevo en la exhibición de bellas artes “Chained Voices” es una asociación con Denver Arts & Venues (DAV). El comité está encantado de tener esta exposición del edificio del Centro Cívico de McNichols curada profesionalmente por el personal de Arts & Venues. El paquete de convocatoria de arte de 2022 incluía una carta de Shanna Shelby, curadora en jefe de Arts & Venues, que detallaba la misión de la agencia, "Para que todos puedan prosperar", y una breve historia del edificio del Centro Cívico McNichols, así como una explicación del proceso curatorial. Esta carta fue enviada con un espíritu de amistad, inspiración y construcción de comunidad, para que los artistas de Voces Encadenadas recibieran la misma cantidad de respeto profesional y dignidad inherente a los artistas no encarcelados.

Los temas del espectáculo de este año son "Luz que nace de la oscuridad" y "Resiliencia". Los artistas que necesitaban ayuda podían involucrarse con estos conceptos si así lo deseaban, pero no existía ningún requisito previo del tema para la selección en las galerías virtuales o presenciales. Haciendo una excepción con el contenido relacionado con pandillas, que es muy raro, todo el arte enviado se acepta y se muestra en el sitio web de Chained Voices (Voces Encadenadas): chainedvoices.org.
